In our effort to move towards a low-carbon economy, Sunway REIT is gradually shifting towards achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. Through several approaches and initiatives, we constantly review our targets against global standards and best practices to continuously improve our decarbonisation efforts in all our operations.

Green Buildings

Sunway REIT is committed to achieve green building certification for all Sunway REIT’s existing buildings by 2034. Buildings purchased after 2024 will either have a green certification already in place or have the ability to achieve green certification status within three years from the acquisition date. 

the pinnacle Sunway

The Pinnacle Sunway is a 24-storey Grade A office building, 3-storey mezzanine floors and 6 levels of basement car park with a total of 855 bays. The property, which is Green Building Index (GBI) certified and has Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) status, is strategically located within Sunway City.
Since gaining recognition from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in 2019 as a leader in the Asia Pacific in promoting forest sustainability awareness, Sunway Malls has continued to implement eco-friendly efforts and educate its shoppers in this regard.

Sunway Mall’s commitment

  • Provide toilet paper from FSC-managed forests and FSC-certified mills, which helps to safeguard the sustainable cycle of responsible harvesting and replanting to maintain the ecology of the forests.

Save Our Forests. Save Our Climate

In September 2021, Sunway XFarms’ participated as a co-organiser with Sunway Malls for the FSC Friday 2021 Virtual Event. The event with the theme “Save Our Forests. Save Our Climate”, aimed to match market supply and demand for sustainable products.

Sunway XFarms and Sunway Malls shared their experiences as FSC promotional licence holders with the 66 participants , who were also given a virtual tour of the Taman Tugu Forest.

Covered topics on sustainable products including sustainable woodcrafting and sustainable paper sourcing and products.

Aligned with Sunway XFarms objective to scale and operate sustainable urban farms with pesticide free produce that are close to consumers, thus reducing carbon footprint, food wastage and nutrition lost through complex food travel processes.

Sunway Malls has stopped printing parking tickets since the launch of the Sunway Smart Parking System in 2019.

ECO - FIRENDLY

The system, which recognises car registration numbers, allows visitors, shoppers and tenants to enter and exit Sunway REIT properties within Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, including Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Sunway Resort Hotel, The Pinnacle Sunway and Menara Sunway, without using paper tickets.

ANUGERAH INOVASI NEGERI SELANGOR (AINS) aims to cultivate creativity and innovation within Selangor, recognised the system as an innovation that enhanced Sunway’s parking system by enabling a ticketless and cashless experience.

A circular economy takes place when the end-of-life of a product or a material is restored and turned into a useful resource that eliminates waste. Generating a circular economy will help to reduce waste and ultimately contribute to climate action.

Food waste is one of the largest amounts of waste sent to landfills. In Malaysia, the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation reported that more than 16,600 tonnes of food are wasted every day, of which about 24% are edible and capable of feeding close to three million people a day.

The collected food waste gets broken down in the composting machine, which is capable of decomposing all types of food. Using controlled parameters, including temperature, agitation and airflow in an aerobic environment, the machine is able to convert all types of food into bio-organic compost within 24 hours. The food waste composting machine can reduce food waste volume by up to 80%.

When the compost is produced, it is used as soil conditioner in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur’s landscape to improve the quality of the soil. Some of the compost is also distributed to the local community and sold to a local landscaping company.

Kumpool Ride

  • Sunway Pyramid Mall collaborated with Kumpool Ride to provide e-hailing bus booking services for Sunway Pyramid Mall visitors and community in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur. 
  • Kumpool Ride gathers passengers’ bookings in real-time before starting its journey based on the passengers’ pick-up and drop-off stops. 
  • The initiative also aims to ease the traffic in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur and encourage commuters to use public transport, ultimately reducing fossil fuel energy consumption and carbon emissions

Engagement with Tenants to Tackle Waste

  • Sunway REIT offices took a proactive approach and collaborated with e-waste collectors to collect old devices for recycling. 
  • In July 2022, Menara Sunway and Sunway Pinnacle organised an e-waste collection campaign with Roche Malaysia, a tenant in Sunway Pinnacle, to raise awareness on environmental impacts as individuals, and as Roche and Sunway employees.
  • The campaign also aimed to:
    • Educate on and promote the importance of environmental sustainability
    • Create a better world for future generations
    • Support and contribute to SDGs 12, 14 and 17
    • Embed sustainability in Sunway’s business strategy and entrench it in the daily duties of Roche’s and Sunway’s employees

Combatting Plastic Pollution​

  • Our shopping malls reduce plastic usage through various initiatives, including eliminating single-use plastics in packaging from 2022 onwards and ensuring that their suppliers and vendors adopt the plastic-free practice.
  • There was no plastic packaging in our festive gift redemption of 30,000 Chinese New Year ang pao packets and 10,700 Hari Raya duit raya packets. This initiative removed 40,700 of plastic packaging that could otherwise pollute our rivers and oceans, which are vital sources of water and food for us.​​

Retail

As the nation transitioned from pandemic to endemic, Sunway Malls reinstated its Customer Satisfaction Survey to understand new customer sentiments that may have changed during the two years of sporadic movement control order phases. The results achieved in 2022 will be used as a new benchmark for the coming years, as businesses restart, restore and recover in the post-pandemic new normal.

OFFICE

Sunway Offices continued to maintain high customer satisfaction scores at 99% in 2022, with nearly all five properties reaching near perfect scores. This was the second consecutive year that the Office segment retained such high scores.


One of the reasons for the significant improvements in the NPS and the customer satisfaction scores was the strong support extended by the Company to the tenants during the COVID-19 pandemic. Another reason was because of our ability to systematically track all service requests submitted by our building tenants through the e-service request software to ensure we achieve 100% completion of the services on a timely basis. The Sunway Property Management App, which allows tenants to submit service requests in a seamless manner was introduced in 2017 as a proof of concept and subsequently widely proliferated in 2019. Based on the feedback, tenants were happy with the shorter downtime of their buildings’ equipment and facilities.

Our shopping malls have upgraded their building security through the installation of CCTVs with high resolutions, behaviour analysis and face detection.

Self-service Kiosk

We are currently developing a self-service kiosk in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall’s ice rink to deliver a seamless experience to customers.

Digitalised Payment

Our shopping malls are equipped with a Unified Payment Terminal, enabling retail tenants to accept cashless payments from e-wallets, debit cards and credit cards via an all-in-one payment terminal.

Bridging Communication

Tenants and mall operators are able to communicate via RetailTECH, a mobile app used by Sunway Malls to bridge communication gaps and improve the delivery of operational solutions.

Indoor Positioning System

Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall offers an indoor positioning system facility on a mobile app, which allows shoppers to get directions within the mall via the app. The app will be available for other malls in the near future.
